Foods To Avoid During The Holidays

0
0

It’s no secret that we all indulge at least a little during the holidays. Pretty much every Holiday gathering involves lots of food and drink, no matter what religion it surrounds and who’s throwing the shindig. Part of the reason why “hit the gym” is the most popular New Years Resolution is because we’re supposed to spend the entire months of November and December stuffing our face. That is, unless you’re one of them damn secular liberals who hates Jesus, but I digress. Before you start hating yourself for all the damage you’ll do to your waistline back at home with your folks, know that it is possible to soften the blow. Holiday get-togethers don’t have to completely undo all of your hard work at the gym. It’s possible to eat plenty and not end up looking like Santa. The key is knowing what’s okay and what to avoid. So here are some foods to avoid during the holidays, or at least consume in small quantities.

eggnog

Eggnog

Let’s take an inventory of some of the ingredients of eggnog: sugar, eggs, heavy whipping cream…alcohol is already caloric enough, especially dark alcohol like bourbon. The worst thing you could possibly do is add all of that sugar and fat to it. Trust me, bourbon is going to make you feel toasty no matter what, so there’s no need to mix it up with all of those extra calories, carbs, and fat.

Hot Spinach and Artichoke Dip 500Spinach/artichoke dip

But it has spinach and/or artichokes in it! It must be good, right? Not if you mix it together with a shit ton of stuff like mayonnaise, sour cream, heavy cream, cheese, butter, and god knows how much extra sodium in order to make it palatable. One or two bites certainly won’t kill you, but it’s really easy to consume almost 300 calories in just one serving of your average spinach/artichoke dip. Savor that bite or two and then STEP AWAY.

Here’s the thing with pretty much every form of white bread out there, no matter what shape it comes in. Everyone knows that there are carbs and such to consider. But more importantly, they have pretty much nothing else to offer you in terms of nutrition. No vitamins, no protein…just sugars. Just do yourself a favor and pass that bread basket along.

glazed hamGlazed ham

Ham, on it’s own, is not all that bad for you. It’s when you start curing and glazing it to within an inch of its life that you start to run into problems. You really don’t need all of that sugar and salt to make your ham taste good. If so, then you’re not doing it right.
